A national multi-disciplinarian and problem-oriented research program. The Dutch urban and rural landscape is in a state of continual transformation, a process that will only be intensified in the near future. The archaeological resources are strongly characterized by wetland conditions and are, as a consequence, mainly subsurface. The vulnerability and invisibility of this particular Dutch archaeological landscape requires an extra research effort at the same time strengthen the aims of the Convention of Valletta: the protection of the archaeological resources by participation in the environmental planning policy. The research program aims at the development of scientific knowledge in order to support the sustainable development of the Dutch archaeological-historical landscape. Consequently, our strategy focuses on establishing a meaningful link between scientific knowledge, archaeological resource management and applied planning policy in the Netherlands. The program is organised from an interdisciplinary view on the cultural-historical landscape along three interrelated research lines: a conceptual line applying the 'cultural biography of the landscape` is a fundamental concept for the meaningful integration of the past with the present and the future and 'action research` as a strategic methodological concept, which supports the interaction between scientific knowledge and the process of reaching political correct decision-making; a strategic multi- and interdisciplinary line focusing on topics like 'next generation` predictive modelling, prospection techniques, deterioration of botanical (macro) remains, perception, experience and behaviour of the public, and interaction between archaeological heritage management and processes of environmental policy; and an applied problem oriented line concentrating on four regions to ensure the interdisciplinary application of the conceptual and strategic lines in particular environmental context and developments. The concept of sustainable development is elaborated for its application in the context of heritage management by distinguishing material, conceptual, methodical and disciplinary sustainability.
