L'Inventaire forestier national est impliqué dans la réalisation de la publication « Les Indicateurs de gestion durable des forêts françaises » depuis 1995. Son rôle est passé au fil des ans de celui de simple fournisseur de données à celui de coordinateur de cette publication. La réalisation de l'édition 2005, actuellement en cours, a mis en évidence différents problèmes concernant la récupération des données, la méthodologie et certaines lacunes. Ce constat nous conduit à proposer plusieurs axes de travail pour l'avenir. Les résultats attendus sont notamment la constitution d'une force de proposition française au sein du processus paneuropéen de gestion forestière durable, en lien avec le Programme Forestier National en cours d'élaboration.

Since 1995, the National Forest Inventory (NFI) has been involved in the publication entitled Indicators for the Sustainable Management of French Forests. Over the years, the role of the NFI has evolved from simply providing the data to coordinating the publication. The 2005 edition, currently ongoing, highlights some of the difficulties met such as information retrieval, methodological issues, missing data, etc. Solutions are proposed to tackle these problems in the future, particularly the composition of a French task force able to make proposals to the Paneuropean process for sustainable forest management interfacing with the ongoing National forest program.
