A Food Frequency Questionnaire method was used to investigate shellfish consumption in the southern coastal region of Vietnam. The survey population consisted of 440 individuals, 51% women and 49% men. All participants were shellfish consumers. The predominant shellfish consumed are green mussel (89%), squid (82%), crab (74%) and shrimp (72%). Urchins and sea cucumber are rarely consumed. The mean consumption rate for bivalves, crustaceans, gastropods, cephalopods, echinoderms and all shellfish combined are 39.3, 20.9, 16.4, 0.3 and 88.1 g/person/day, respectively. Shellfish is essentially purchased in official and temporary markets. The majority of shellfish are consumed in the dry season. These data will be useful for the assessment of exposure to shellfish contaminants such as phycotoxins, heavy metals and pesticides.
