Résumé original
Original abstract
For many years Denmark has been one of the world's major producers of blue mussels harvested on natural banks. However, the production of mussels from suspended cultures is now increasing. In general, the Danish production areas have been regarded as low risk areas with respect to toxic algae and occurrence of marine biotoxins in shellfish. DSP toxins have been the main problem whereas PSP toxins and ASP toxins have been detected very few times in Danish mussels. The Danish monitoring system is currently evaluated and improved based on experiences and availability of new methods. Recent changes made to the Danish mussel monitoring system to improve both the food safety and the commercial conditions for the mussel producers, include changes of critical limits for some of the phytoplankton species as well as implementation of measurements of the actual cell toxicity of potential toxic algae as part of the day to day risk assessment. The use and the advantages using heat-treated mussels as matrix for marine biotoxin testing is discussed. Mouse bioassays are still used in the Danish monitoring system; however, modifications have been made to meet the increasing demand for animal experimentation ethics.
